Chapter Three

Mercy battled the heaviness of reality with the determination of a natural-born fighter. She’d much rather stay in the wonderful place between wakefulness and sleep, where life seemed easy and all one had to worry about was staying in bed for five more minutes.

“Mercy.”

She reached out blindly to smack the warm body hovering over her. “Go away, Conrad. See me lying here with my eyes closed? That means I’m sleeping. Get a hobby. Leave me alone.”

Conrad gasped, though it likely had nothing to do with Mercy’s hit. He was solid, unmoving muscle as usual.

“That’s so weird,” he said, sounding awed. “Really, that’s strange. Mental whiplash.”

“Gods,” she sobbed, knowing he wasn’t going away. He was such a pest. Why did she tolerate him? With no other choice, she fought her way to full wakefulness—and then wished she hadn’t. Every muscle in her body screamed in protest. Her eyes opened wide to the pain and she turned to look up at Conrad in stunned agony. “Did I get trampled by a bagerian in my sleep?”

Conrad winced. “Not exactly.”

“Holy God.” She tried to sit, but gave up when the pain blinded her. It felt like a million knifes were being twisted through every muscle in her body. “What the hell happened to me?”

“You don’t hear yourself going back and forth?” Conrad asked in concern. “You’re switching languages. I thought it was odd with Dray, but it’s stranger with you because I’ve never heard you speak Alanten. At least he knew English already.”

“What are you rambling about?” she growled and then gestured to herself, speaking slowly. “I’m dying, Conrad. I need help.”

“Oh, right.” Conrad turned around, going to the dresser in the corner. “Dray had this made in the infirmary. He said to make sure you took it.”

“What is it?” Mercy asked, eyeing the glass in his hand skeptically. Memories were starting to make their way past the pain and she knew with absolute certainty she didn’t want anything from the infirmary. “Did you get it from the idiot doctor?”

“Nah.” Conrad shook his head quickly. “It’s an Alanten remedy. It has a numbing effect, makes moving after a mating heat easier. Dray may have added a healing tonic. Usually we like to wear our passion wounds, but I think seeing them on you upsets him. He probably did put a healing tonic in here.”

“Is it okay for humans?” Mercy asked, unnerved by Conrad’s rambling. He only did that when he was extremely nervous or uncomfortable. “I wouldn’t call Dray a master chemist. Do you think all those tonics combine okay?”

Conrad frowned at the glass in his hand, looking unsure.

“Just give it to me,” Mercy huffed as her memory started to return. Five solid days of carnal sex was hard to forget for long. She caught a glimpse of bruises along the inside of her arm as she reached for the glass and knew she looked horrible. Dray was probably having a meltdown in the wake of their mating.

She drank the amber contents of the glass, surprised to find it a pleasant minty flavor.
